It’s been one hell of a rollercoaster ride the past few days due to Bird Flu.
So on Thursday we learnt that we were situated in a poultry surveillance zone. This means that we were within 10km of a site where bird flu had been detected.
What then unfolded was a weeks worth of battling to get us a licence to be able to slaughter the turkeys.
If you are a small scale producer I am very happy to pass on the details of what I have learnt through this process in case you fall into the same situation as me. I won’t run through it here, it’s a long story ?.
We have the licence and we are now good to go, pending a vet visit.
What I did want to put across is the sheer thanks and gratitude that I owe the National Farmers Union who without we would still likely be without a licence.
Poor Jeremy has had me on the phone all weekend and he has absolutely battled in with APHA to support us.
When you join the NFU you never truly appreciate what they do until you need their help and when you do they effectively become a farming emergency service. So Jeremy, Tom, Amy and your team thank you from us here at Out and About and thank you from my customers who will now be getting their Christmas dinners.
Small scale producers, if you do one thing, join the NFU, you never know when you may need them.
